Here is a recap of how the divisional races ended last season.  The teams with the stars beside them made the playoffs last season.

This is the division I have the hardest time looking objectively as my Buffalo Sabres are in this division.  The team that did not make the playoffs that I think will improve the most is Detroit, though it will not make them a playoff team.  If Tampa stays healthy, they are the ones with the best chance to unseat a playoff team.  My guess is that Boston is the most vulnerable for being removed from playoff rank.

This division is absolute mayhem.  Some would say it's the strongest division in the NHL.  The Central would object, and have good cause for their objection.  The bottom four could improve, but I'm not sure that any of them can unseat a playoff team.  Washington and Pittsburgh are locks for playoff runs.  The Blue Shirts of Manhattan are close to that.  I'm not sure I'm so confident in Columbus.  So if one of the 4 playoff teams gets booted, my guess is the Blue Jackets get the boot.  And Philadelphia is my guess as to who is capable of giving that boot to a playoff team.

This division is crazy good.  Colorado was not in contention last season, and they were the only team in the division that had no chance.  I don't think any of the four playoff teams get the boot.  I can't imagine which of them could.  Improvements in goalie play could cause Dallas to be best in line to get into the playoffs.  Even then, I think the Stars best shot is to play for the opportunity to steal the second wild card away from the Pacific.

This division has improved greatly.  The key to success likely will once more be survival in the "California Triangle."  Add to that now that once more the Province of Alberta has become unfriendly territory for foes entering therein.  There will be some very exciting hockey in this division.  It will be interesting to see how Vegas does and what impact their inaugural season has on the division and the league.  Those in playoff contention had better be attentive to the Central seeking to steal both wild cards while these teams pummel one another.  I think Calgary feels the sting of this and becomes the one team in this division to not return in the playoffs while the rest of the division sees a Central Division team grab their wild card.

Stanley Cup Review V

Game 6 ... Tonight in Nashville...

The Cup will be in the Predators Arena tonight.  Nashville would rather that not be known, and certainly not seen.  The Cup always arrives after start time and is brought in without fanfare.  But if it comes to the ice, it's all shiny and the show is a big deal.  If the Cup sees the ice in Nashville, it means Pittsburgh is celebrating on the road.  The Pens lead this series 3-2.

This really has turned into a "Homer" series, and I think it continues as such.  The fact that, as was shown on the broadcast of the last game,  these two teams combined have won 18 of 22 games this playoff season reinforces this home-ice bias.  Nashville wins Game 6.  Pittsburgh wins Game 7 and the Cup.

I'm still cheering for Jake Guentzel to win the Conn Smythe.  Whatever happens, I really hope that the MVP isn't given to Syd just because he is the captain and arguably one of the best players in the world.  He has not looked like himself in this series.  Perhaps this is because Nashville has figured out that they can get under his skin and distract him from his game.

Stanley Cup Review IV

Game 5 is upon us!  This series has been incredible.  The home teams have a perfect record.  That's good news for Pittsburgh.  Both teams have 3 chances to win 2 games to get to that magic 16 wins necessary to hoist Lord Stanley's Cup.  The Penguins have home ice for 2 of those three.  It seems logical that Pittsburgh is on track to defend their reign as champions.  I do think this series is going 7 games.  And I do think Pittsburgh wins the cup in Game 7.

But watch out for Nashville.  They have some momentum going into tonight, having won the last 2.  At some point they absolutely need to win a game on the road.  I think their best shot at doing so is tonight in Game 5.  To do so, they will need to have an excellent performance from their goalie and defense, and put a lot of screens on Matt Murray and hope for some bad bounces that catch the rising star in Black and Gold out of position and helpless to Predator shots.  Nashville makes it interesting.  I think they will get a good goalie performance, and a good net presence in front of Murray.  But I have doubts as to whether their defense can contain the high-powered Penguins offense for a full game.

Pittsburgh wins Game 5...
Nashville wins Game 6...
Pittsburgh wins Cup in Game 7.

Look for Guentzel to get back on the scoreboard and make another push for Conn Smythe by matching if not breaking Dini Cicerelli's record of 21 playoff points as a rookie.  If he does that, I think Conn Smythe is locked up.

Stanley Cup Review III

Nashville took Game 3.  They fed off their home crowd, especially in the second period.  It will be interesting to see how Pittsburgh responds tonight.

Stanley Cup Review II

Pittsburgh took Game 2 also.  So now the Penguins play tonight up 2-0 is this championship series.  That's the good news.  The bad news for them is that this game will be played in "Smashville!"  The Nashville fans will have their arena rocking tonight.  The Predators will try to make this a "Homer" series where each home team manages to find a way to win the game played in front of their own fans.

Only don't forget Pittsburgh has an advantage in such a series.  The Penguins can loose all three games that could possibly be played in Nashville and still win the cup.  That's significant, especially as we don't know yet how Pittsburgh will respond and play in that environment.  Tonight's game will tell us a lot about that.  The Penguins will have to survive an initial rowdy fan base and a Preds team that will be feeding on their fans enthusiasm.  Honestly I think Nashville takes this game and Game 4 will tell us a lot more about the Penguins in hostile territory.

Nashville needs to win on home ice.  If they can win in their own barn, the daunting task before them is more manageable.  At the very least, they need to win at least one in Pittsburgh.  For every game they drop at home, the number of games they must win in Pittsburgh increases.  Nashville cannot afford that!

Something to watch tonight will be how Nashville's All-Star goalie responds to the thrashing he took in Game 2.  I expect that he'll be really good tonight.

What I'll be watching tonight, though, is #59 in White.  Jake Guentzel has 3 goals in 2 games.  At the rate he's going, my vote for Conn Smythe, the MVP of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, goes to "Jake from State Farm."  Unfortunately I don't have a vote.  But I hope that those who do are paying attention to this rising star.  I in particular am thrilled with his performance, and that of his teammates, whom I have seen thrive in Wilkes-Barre.

Before the series began, I said I thought Nashville would win the cup, though I'm cheering for Pittsburgh.  After 2 games, it appears that the experience factor is paying large dividends.  This series could easily be tied.  There have been large periods of time where Nashville had the momentum and the Penguins were struggling.  Perhaps it would be best for both teams to imagine that this series really is tied.  In the end, I think Pittsburgh claims the cup.  But, Penguins fans, don't get crazy and think this is going to happen in a 4 game sweep.  I think this series is going at least 6 games.  These two teams are both too good to be dismissed quicker than that.

Stanley Cup Review I

Pittsburgh took Game 1.  Game 2 will be played on Wednesday in Pittsburgh.

The Penguins must address offense.  They went somewhere around 35 minutes without a shot on goal.

Pittsburgh's first goal should not have counted.  Crosby got away with giving an elbow to the face of a Predator, kept the puck alive, and led to that goal.  The Pens Captain should have been in the box.

Momentum shifted greatly early in the opening period.  Nashville should have had the first goal.  I looked at the video multiple times and I swear that the Predators were on side, which meant that the ruling should have been a good goal.

Wearing one of my WBS sweaters, I was delighted to see "Babys all Grown Up" have success.  4 of the 5 Pens goals were scored by former WBS players I have seen play in NEPA; Bonino with 2 while Guentzel and Sheary each had 1.  And then there's Matt Murray.  This man is quickly becoming one of the best NHL goalies!  He kept his team in the game.

I successfully picked the winner of this game.  I think Nashville takes Game 2 and ties the series before it goes to Tennessee.

Lord Stanley's Cup

I'm torn.... Nashville vs Pittsburgh...

In theory I love the thought of a team winning their first championship.  I want to root for the Predators.  But there is something amazing about watching these Penguins play and recalling days when I as a STH in Wilkes-Barre saw them play in the AHL.

That said, for sake of predictions, I'm going Nashville in 7...

And yet I'll be rooting for the Pens, even if the Pittsburgh version looks wimpy next to the WBS Penguin.

On a side note, can you imagine what must be going on in Montreal?  The Canadiens management must see this playoffs as a bad nightmare.  They said P. K. was no good.  The fans loved him.  The management and the coach thought otherwise.  Therein is no longer coach.  Subban is now loved in Nashville and could bring them a cup.

I'm looking forward to a good series!

Pittsburgh in 5 Games…

I like how this Penguins team is playing.  It worries me that Ottawa has started so slowly in all games except Game 6 of the last series.  The Senators cannot start sluggishly against Pittsburgh.  If they do, it will be a short series.  I think Ottawa will manage a game or two where they start fast, but they cannot do so consistently.  The Penguins will take advantage of this!

This should be a very good and very tough series.  At this point, though, I think the Ducks have a slight advantage.  That said, I think either team could win this.  It’s a coin toss.  That is an exciting fact for fans of hockey, but not for the fans of the Ducks and Predators respectively.

This series has been very good, and very close.  Each team has won on the road and at home, so home ice has not meant much.  The Caps are presently riding a high as they pulled off an amazing accomplishment in Game 5.  Prior to Game 5, in the 39 games, regular season and playoffs combined, in which the Penguins entered the third period with a lead, Pittsburgh won 39 of these games, or 94.9% of the time.  The Capitals broke this.  The Penguins can still boast of 37 of 40, which is still 92..5%.  Washington can’t risk tempting these numbers again.  They need to play with the lead.  I still see Pittsburgh closing this out in 6 games.

I think Anaheim took the Oilers lightly.  They paid dearly for this mental error.  After dropping the first two, the Ducks have won 3 in a row, and clearly have momentum.  I hope it continues, and to be quite blunt, I blame the NHL for my own opinion of the Oilers.  Had the NHL handed down a suspension, the stick to the groin in Round 1 would be dead news.  Instead, my hope is that Edmonton pays dearly by being eliminated in this series.  I think it will happen in Game 6.

I didn’t think Anaheim would take this series this quickly.  And yet I think Calgary played better than this sweep would show.  The Flames are heading in the right direction.  It just wasn’t their year to dive deep into the playoffs.  But that year is coming.  Meanwhile Anaheim needs to focus on the fact that they will need to step up their game against either the Oilers or the Sharks to win this bracket and make it to the Championship Match for the Western Conference.
