Lesson B 0618 Reflection

The Lesson [Thematic Reading Option]
Exodus 19:2-8a
The Israelites had journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel camped there in front of the mountain. Then Moses went up to God; the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the Israelites: You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.” So Moses came, summoned the elders of the people, and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him. The people all answered as one: “Everything that the Lord has spoken we will do.”

The people of God have witnessed the deliverance of God.  They are no longer in Egypt.  They have crossed the Sea on dry ground.  They have seen God act on their behalf against the Egyptians whose hearts had turned once more against them and sought to place them under bondage once more.  Moses calls upon the people of God to recommit themselves to God in the remembrance of what God has done for them.  They respond by vowing to be faithful to God.

Today we are placed in a similar position, as we are at every Mass.   We hear of the mighty acts of God, and are called to recommit ourselves in faithfulness to God.  The question before us then is shall we respond as did our ancestors in the faith by responding in faith to God, trusting that as God has delivered us in times past, so also we can rely upon God each day, knowing that God is our very life, health, and salvation.
