Lenten Day I

The Western Rite fast of Lent began today; Ash Wednesday.  The Eastern Rite Catholics and Orthodox began the fast of Great Lent got a jump on us in the West as they began the 40 day fast on Monday; Clean Monday being the name of the Eastern Celebration.

For each the fast lasts 40 days and is a, time of preparation for the Pascual Celebration of the Resurrection.  There are of course more than 40 days till Easter.  The East does not include Holy Week in the numbering of the days of Lent.  The West does not include Sundays.  Every Sunday is a Feast, a day when fasting is set aside, for each Sunday is the Lord's Day, the Day of Resurrection.

The fast, contrary to public sentiment, is not so much about giving something up.  One can fast by feasting on things eternal and committing to acts of mercy, love and service.

This Lent my intent is to be more attentive to the Scriptures.  On each of the Lenten Days, you will find here on my blog a reflection on the assigned readings for the Daily Mass in The Episcopal Church.  I invite you to join me in reading and considering the Word of God this Lent.
